The proportion of Jobseeker Allowance claimants rose in 2009 and is above target. This is due to the increase in unemployment that has been seen during the economic recession.

Although the proportion of Income Support claimants fell in 2009, it is above the target rate. This is likely to be due to the effect of the recession and people coming off Income Support at a slower than expected rate.

Number of childcare places across all sectors

The steady reduction in childminder places year on year follows a national trend based on the increasing Care Commission registration requirements.  2 new clubs will open in August 2009 adding 40 new places.

The employment rate has remained stable and is on target. The rate may fall slightly in 2009/10 as the recession affects employment prospects, but will recover from 2010/11 onwards.

National advice suggests that this is potentially an area for national development, to ensure consistency across Scotland in relation to the definition of vulnerable adults and of ‘employable’.

Number of people volunteering in Fairer Scotland Fund Initiatives

Projects and initiatives funded through the Fairer Scotland Fund have exceeded the targets set at the outset and continue to provide increased opportunities for people living in our most disadvantaged areas to obtain valuable voluntary work experience and to contribute positively towards improving their own communities through their involvement with community and locally based services.
