Final Draft Local Transport Strategy

ABERDEEN CITY COUNCIL FINAL DRAFT LOCAL TRANSPORT STRATEGY 2008 – 2012

Earlier this year Aberdeen City Council consulted on a Consultative Draft Local Transport Strategy (LTS), which was prepared in recognition that there was a need to have a proper debate on the pros and cons of specific interventions that could be implemented through the LTS to address local challenges and needs. The results from the consultation process on the Consultative Draft LTS have been analysed and a Consultation Report is available for download via the links below. This Report summarises the main results from this consultation exercise and outlines how the results have been taken on board to prepare the Final Draft LTS.

The Final Draft LTS, which can be downloaded via the links below, has been influenced by the results of the consultation and presents the Council’s vision and objectives for improving the City’s transport system and sets out a comprehensive list of actions and policies which we will strive to implement and work by during the period 2008 – 2012.

The Final Draft LTS considers issues such as travel planning, walking, cycling, public transport, road maintenance, road safety, parking and freight. Some more innovative measures to potentially improve the city’s transport network, such as High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes and Large Vehicle Lanes, are also discussed. Concentration is also given to the type of interventions that could be implemented to lock-in the benefits of the proposed Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route.

A Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) has also been undertaken to consider the environmental impacts of the Final Draft LTS and the Environmental Report can also be downloaded via the links below.

Comment is invited on any aspect of this Final Draft LTS during this – the final – consultation period, which runs for 8 weeks closing on the 18th of January 2008. Please send any comments on the Final Draft LTS to:

BACKGROUND

FIRST STAGE OF THE CONSULTATION PROCESS

ABERDEEN CITY COUNCIL CONSULTATIVE DRAFT LOCAL TRANSPORT STRATEGY 2007 – 2012

Aberdeen City Council have officially launched the consultation into the Consultative Draft Local Transport Strategy (LTS) 2007 – 2012. The consultation ran for seven weeks, closing on 2nd July 2007.

The Consultative Draft LTS sets out the Transport Vision and Objectives of the Council and reviews various interventions (policies and projects) that could be implemented to address local challenges and needs.  When approved, this new document will replace the existing LTS that was produced in 2000.

Rather than present a specific strategy to the public, the Consultative Draft LTS has been developed in recognition that there is a need to have a proper debate on the merits and demerits of specific interventions that could be implemented through the LTS. The draft LTS considers issues such as travel planning, walking, cycling, public transport, road maintenance, road safety, parking and freight. Some more innovative measures to potentially improve the city’s transport network, such as High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes and Freight Only Lanes, are also discussed within the LTS. The Strategy also focuses on the type of interventions that could be implemented to lock-in the benefits of the proposed Aberdeen Western Periphery Route.

The Aberdeen Consultative Draft LTS, which follows the recent publication of the Scottish Executive’s National Transport Strategy and also the Nestrans’ Regional Transport Strategy, therefore provides a genuine opportunity for local people and stakeholders to have their say on how they think the city’s transport system should be developed.
