Active Aberdeen - Targets

Targets for 2006-07

To be considered by the Active Aberdeen Forum. Targets will include the establishment of baseline information for strategic performance indicators; completion of New Opportunities Fund funded facilities; review of New Opportunities Fund Activities programme; development of new pavilions and improvements to pitches at Altens and Hazlehead; development of opportunities to attract and accommodate "hard to reach” population groups; completion of structural review within Aberdeen City Council resulting in the establishment of cohesive links between formal Physical Education curriculum, New Opportunities Fund Activities, Sports Development and Active Schools.

Main Successes of the Forum in 2005-06

  • Identification of key strategic performance indicators. These are under the following headings:
    • Facility Usage
    • Sports Participation
    • Play
    • Facility Provision
    • Physical Activity
    • Physical Education
    • Sports Performance
    • Sports Events
  • Review of actions identified in Active Aberdeen Strategy.
  • Improved communication and relationship building between partners.

The Forum has recognised, through its work, continuous improvement through social inclusion; resource and financial savings; equality; better joint partnership working; shared knowledge and effective communication.  One of the main benefits is ensuring that duplication of work is minimised, and knowledge is shared, resulting in efficiency savings for all partners.

The community benefits have included community partnership and ownership and provision of better quality services to the citizens of Aberdeen.  Increased communication has helped to develop a sense of ownership for activities and projects being developed in local communities.

The overall benefits, including effective communication between the partners, have ensured that sports and physical activity opportunities and provision have increased in the City.

The development of plans for the proposed Regional Sports Facility in the City has continued to progress at a good rate as a result of partnership working and shared knowledge from the various partners and stakeholders. Resource has been shared between Aberdeen University and Aberdeen City Council which has resulted in savings.

Barriers 2005-06

The three main barriers for the Forum in 2005-06 have been:

  • Lack of shared resources, across all partners.
  • Other time commitments and lack of dedicated resource to support the Forum.
  • The Forum is seen as an add-on rather than integral to sports and physical activity development in the City. The Forum relies on the good intentions of its members.
  • Securing regular and wider representation from the voluntary sector and the secondary Physical Education teaching profession.

These barriers have been addressed by:

Forum meetings have been held in different venues, on different days and at different times, including daytime and evening, to ensure as many partners as possible have the opportunity to participate.
