City Assembly 2004

A small but enthusiastic crowd of 50 participated in Aberdeen’s first City Assembly meeting in the Music Hall on the 30th November 2004.

The event brought together people from a variety of community groups including youth groups, minority ethnic groups, community councils, churches, carers groups, disability groups and community planning groups as well as citizens attending in their own right.

Dr Philip Muinde chaired a wide ranging discussion under the question Communities – Alive or Dead?  Topics debated included the balance of responsibility for community safety between the citizens and the police; the contribution young people make to their communities; the experience of new residents in Aberdeen; the extent to which society has changed over the past 50 years.

The assembly overwhelming supported a series of propositions on the theme that there is cause for optimism in Aberdeen; that more will be done to create safe communities; that people will try to make newcomers to Aberdeen feel more welcome and that different communities will increasingly show concern for the needs of other communities.

Councillor Kate Dean who said she was there to listen to the views of citizens said afterwards “This was a very encouraging first step in building what I hope will become an important city event in our annual calendar.  I would like to see many more people attending next year and with this in mind we will plan a longer and more intensive build up to the next City Assembly.”

Lavina Massie, Civic Forum Chair said “The Civic Forum will be studying the full report of the City Assembly’s discussion and in particular the propositions agreed.  We will try to build them into the work that we undertake on behalf of all Aberdeen’s communities.”
