Clean City Challenge

The Clean City Challenge has now been taken up by the Clean City Working Group and the Waste Strategy Group, which report to the Environmental Challenge Forum.

The targets for the Clean City Challenge are based on those set in the North East Area Waste Plan and Aberdeen City Councils Waste Implementation Plan and the litter plan

The targets are:

  1. To introduce waste reduction measures by 2010, to hold Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) arisings to 2002 levels. No unsorted waste to be landfilled by 2010.
  2. Introduce home composting for up to 15% of all suitable households. Expand small-scale community composting.
  3. Increase the number of bring-to sites receiving dry recyclables by 2008 to 1 in 2000 households.  Dry recyclate communal street bins will also act as a bring-to facility in Aberdeen City by 2005.
  4. Introduce kerbside collection schemes for segregated green > recyclables to 50% of households with gardens by 2005 and 100% by 2008.
  5. To develop a short term Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Aberdeen City by mid 2004, whilst investigating a long term solution.
  6. To develop the necessary infrastructure to enable Aberdeen City Council to meet commitments as set out in the area waste plan.
  7. Seek funding from the Scottish Executive Strategic Waste Fund to progress a new in vessel composting facility for garden waste within the city.
