BLOOD BORNE VIRUSES - FREE! -1 Day Training Event – FREE!
Wednesday 21st July 2010, Caithness General Hospital, Seminar Room, Bankhead Road, Wick, KW1 5NS

A one day training event on blood borne viruses providing basic awareness on HIV, Hepatitis C, and Hepatitis B to increase the knowledge and skills of those working directly or indirectly with people who are infected with BBVs or those at risk of infection.

This training event has been developed with a multi-disciplinary audience in mind; therefore we are encouraging a wide group of people to attend ranging from workers in the NHS, Social Services, and Housing to workers from the Voluntary Sector to Service Users and Patient Group Members.

Activity Objectives

  • Relate to practice the impact of personal and societal attitudes towards blood borne viruses
  • Define terminology used in relation to HIV, Hepatitis C and B
  • Describe current trends in HIV Hepatitis B and C in Scotland and within Highland
  • Relate transmission routes of HIV, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B to risk behaviours
  • Describe disease progression, including the signs and symptoms of HIV, Hepatitis C and
  • Hepatitis B infection
  • Identify strategies and Interventions that help prevent the spread of blood borne viruses
  • Outline methods of infection control and procedures for dealing with occupational injuries

Scottish Training on Drugs & Alcohol Postgraduate Programmes 2010-2011

Both programmes are aimed at professionals who wish to gain a specialist Postgraduate qualification, as well as valuable knowledge and skills relevant to the substance misuse field. The programmes are taught and accredited by the University of Glasgow.

The Postgraduate programmes will commence in September 2010 and will be taught on a part-time basis over one academic year. Teaching for these programmes will be highly interactive, drawing on participants' own experiences as a means of helping them to develop their knowledge and skills.

University of Stirling - Certificate in Drug & Alcohol Studies (Starting Sept 2010


Certificate of Higher Education: Drug and Alcohol Practice (2010-2011)

The Certificate of Higher Education is a one-year, part-time programme, taught and accredited by the University of Glasgow.The programme has been designed specifically for those currently working in the drug and alcohol misuse field and it aims to provide students with knowledge and transferable skills relevant to the field. Applicants are not required to have gained previous University qualifications, but they require candidates to possess at least one year's experience of working in the substance misuse field.

The CPTI provide 3 day introductory courses in CBT, Motivational Interviewing, CAT and Counselling Skills. All of the coursesaredesigned to provide staff with additional knowledge and skills in working with service users, and are delivered by facilitators who are also practitioners and experts in their field.


Mental Health First Aid Training - May to October 2010

The 2-day course will teach you to:

  • Give initial help to someone experiencing a mental health problem
  • Deal with a crisis situation or the first signs of someone developing mental ill health
  • Guide people towards appropriate self and professional help
